Selcok, Turkey: Gateway to Ephesus

By , October 15, 2010 8:00 am

CIMG0336 We had a group of four, so we rented a car i Istanbul for about $40 a day, and drove south to Selcok (pronounced sel-chouk).  Selcok is a small town located just outside of the ancient Roman city of Ephesus.  The ruins here represent one of the best preserved Roman cities anywhere in the world.  It’s pretty cool.  There are two amphitheatres, marble-paved streets, the old library, and a ton of other ruins.  Definitely worth the half day it takes to walk through the ruins.

Isatanbul or Constantinople?

By , October 13, 2010 8:00 am

CIMG0181 Really, it’s no body’s business but the Turks.  Boom!  Didn’t see that joke coming, did you?  Istanbul is a pretty great place to spend some time.  It’s got it all: one part Europe, one part Asia; the best of the new, and some amazing history.

Dubai and the Tallest Building in the World

By , October 11, 2010 8:00 am

IMG_0760 Flying from Egypt to Turkey we were stuck with a 4 hour layover in Dubai.  Luckily, Dubai has a great metro system that connects the airport to the rest of the city.  We hoped on and went straight to the tallest building in the world.  It’s really tall.  It’s also located next to the largest mall in the world, which was nice since it was a billion degrees outside.

Diving off Dahab, Egypt

By , October 8, 2010 8:00 am

IMG_0982 If you’re into SCUBA diving one of the best destinations in the world is Dahab, Egypt.  Dahab is a small desert town located on the east side of the southern Sinai Peninsula.  Accommodation is pretty cheap, the food is cheap, and the drinks are pretty reasonable.  The diving costs about 30 euro per dive, but it’s worth every penny.  Seriously some of the best diving I’ve ever done.  The whole area is covered with beautiful coral reefs full of tropical fish, and it’s all just off the beach.  Even the snorkeling is amazing.  Just like swimming in an aquarium.

Cairo as an Independent Traveler

By , October 6, 2010 8:00 am

IMG_0802 After being in South Africa for a few weeks we decided to fly up to Cairo for four or five days of ancient Egyptian sightseeing.  We figured we would walk around the city, take a bus out to the pyramids, and check out some museums.  No big deal, right?  It turns out that Cairo is the most frustrating city in the world for an independent traveler.

German Snuff

By , September 30, 2010 1:57 pm

Snuff Based on that post title alone I’m going to get a lot of traffic to my site from sicko-perverts looking for German snuff films.  That’s right, I see you, you sicko-pervert!  Anyway, since smoking was banned in the beer tents at Oktoberfest this year, a lot of people were using snuff.  It was even sold at the festival, and in several flavors.  I’m not sure if “flavor” is the right word to describe something that goes up your nose.

Go on an African Safari

By , September 29, 2010 11:50 am

IMG_0548 Since we were in Africa we figured we should go on safari, right?  Turns out that South Africa alone has about a billion options for safari from private game parks to a bunch of national parks.  To figure out what to do we went to one of the tour booking agencies on Long St., in Cape Town.  They had lots of tour options ranging from thousands of dollars down to hundreds.  We ended up on an Intrepid Kruger Adventure Tour.  Four days in Kruger National Park with 2 nights of camping and one night in a lodge.  The camping was deluxe: cots with mattresses, only two per tent, and there was a cook at each campsite cooking tasty African food.

Oktoberfest 2010: The First Weekend

By , September 21, 2010 3:16 am

IMG_1938 So we survived the first weekend of Oktoberfest.  It was great.  Even if you don’t love beer, like I do, you should still go.  The opening day we went to the grounds at about 8:00am to try to get a seat in the  Augustiner tent, but it was full by the time we got in.  We ended up in the outdoor beer garden of another tent, but it was still a great time.  Our waitress could carry 10–>

Oktoberfest: Booya Futhermucker!

By , September 16, 2010 9:51 pm

I’m typing this from the Munich train station at 6:30 am local time, and I’m super fucking excited.  The only logical explanation: Oktoberfest!  Oktoberfest is the world’s largest fair, with about 6 million people coming each year.  This year is the 200th anniversary, so it gets a little extra booya.
